Valerie's Story
I grew up working in my family's hardware store. I loved the fact that we helped people fix the broken things they brought to us. It felt like our purpose was to somehow set things right in the world.Like many owners of small and mid-sized businesses, though, sometimes it was my parents who needed the help. They hit a particularly rough patch a couple of years after buying the store. I was just 13 years old, but I knew it was a difficult and scary time. Looking back, though, that moment of crisis was absolutely the turning point for them.
One of my favorite quotes is: "The difference between a comedy and a tragedy is that, in a comedy, the characters figure out reality in time to do something about it." This story is a really great example of that.
